Mojang’s annual Minecraft showcase has come and gone once again, and although the days of the mob vote are long gone, the developer had no shortage of content to announce for fans. After going over the fast-approaching Copper Age content drop one more time (which finally gives Minecraft fans just about every use for copper they could ask for), Mojang turned its attention to Mounts of Mayhem, the last update of 2025. As its name suggests, it’s all about rideable mobs, and although it doesn’t add a lot of features for existing mounts so far, it has a lot for mob-riding fans to look forward to.
Minecraft: Mounts of Mayhem's Features So Far
The Nautilus Mob
Arguably the core feature in Mounts of Mayhem is the nautilus, an all-new aquatic mob. After years of teasing their existence with the nautilus shell item, Mojang is adding the nautilus as a new mount. Not only does the nautilus give players a dramatically improved range of movement underwater, but it prevents the player from drowning as long as they’re mounted. Players can tame and breed nautiluses by feeding them pufferfish, and if they’d like to protect their cephalopod companion (or just dress it up) they can equip the nautilus with armor, much like Minecraft‘s horses.
The nautilus’ size and the ability to tame it is far from true to life, clashing with realism in a similar way to the scrapped feature of frogs eating fireflies, but nevertheless, taking creative liberties with reality has had some charming results, as is often the case in Minecraft.
The Zombie Nautilus
Players aren’t the only ones getting a new steed. Nautiluses can also spawn in a zombie form, and drowned zombies can ride these in the same way as the player. The zombie nautilus is a neutral mob when it’s on its own, but giving Minecraft‘s already-lethal drowned mob more mobility as it hurls tridents is a brutal combination. With this new mob tag-team on the loose, it’s no surprise that players can outfit their nautiluses with armor.
Zombie Horses
There’s one more mob in this update: the zombie horse. Fans have had chances to find skeleton horses for years, but the zombie version has languished in Creative mode exclusivity for just as long. Finally, Mojang is putting zombie horses in Survival mode as a mount for Minecraft‘s classic zombies. These horses are passive, so players can theoretically reclaim them from their riders, but they’ll burn in the sun, so they require special care. Maybe Mojang will let players cure zombie horses in the same way as zombie villagers, but that’s just speculation.
The Spear
The final big feature for Mounts of Mayhem is the latest Minecraft weapon: the spear. Much like in real life, the spear is primed for mounted combat, allowing players to stab enemies as they ride past, but it also works as a longer-range melee weapon on foot. Notably, the spear deals more damage based on the player’s speed; whether they’re riding a horse or swooping past with an elytra, Minecraft players who like hit-and-run tactics have a great new weapon on their hands. Minecraft added the mace last year, so the spear suggests Mojang still has combat high on its mind. One wonders what other weapon updates might show up next year.
As generous as the first look at Mounts of Mayhem was, it’s entirely possible Mojang hasn’t played all its cards yet. There are still plenty of mount-related feature Minecraft could take a shot at, such as:
- Horseshoes that improve a horse’s speed or jumping ability
- Armor for camels, pigs, and happy ghasts
- New fence gates for corrals or barn doors for better mount housing
- Saddlebags for horses and camels
It’s hard to say if any of these features are at all likely, but it won’t be long before fans find out what else Mounts of Mayhem includes, if anything. Mojang plans to release this content drop before the end of 2025, so it’s all but guaranteed that fans will hear more about its contents in the next month or so; it’s just a matter of time.
